'Mac OS Compatible' My Passport, My Book and WD easystore drives formatted with NTFS will mount as a Read Only file system when connected to a macOS. Connect it, power it up, go to Disk Utility (in Applications/Utilities), select the WD disk on the left, go to the Erase tab, and choose 'Mac OS. However, you may have run into a problem trying to use your Western Digital hard drive with multiple operating systems. This is because you must format the drive with a specific file system before using it with a computer, and Windows and Mac computers run on different file systems.
The Sweepstakes will run from on or about October 28, 2018 until on or about December 23, 2018 (the 'Entry Period'). Entries received outside the Entry Period are void. (1) Share any product found on the B&H website (the 'Website') on Facebook or Twitter via the dedicated links contained on the website using the hashtag #BHWishlist; or (2) Mail a postcard (postmarked during the Entry Period) containing your name, address, phone number, and email address, and indicate the subject(s), if any, about which you are interested in receiving future emails from B&H (e.g. Photo, video, audio, computers, home theater, portable entertainment ) (optional) to: B&H $500.00 Gift Card Dash Sweepstakes, c/o B&H Foto & Electronics Corp., 440 Ninth Avenue, New York, NY 10001 (either option, an 'Entry'). Entries must not, in the sole and absolute discretion of the Sponsor, contain obscene, provocative, defamatory, sexually explicit, or otherwise objectionable or inappropriate content. Entries deemed by Sponsor to be inappropriate will be disqualified.
Entries owned by a third party, or the use of any trademarks, service marks, logos, brands, or products owned by a third party are not acceptable for entry into the Sweepstakes. Limit 1 entry per person, per day. Winner Selection/Prizes/Odds. The B&H Social Team will randomly select a winner from among all eligible entries every Monday during the Entry Period, for a total eight (8) winners (each a 'Winner'). Each Winner will receive a B&H Gift Card pre-valued in the amount of $500.00. No cash or other substitutions will be offered. Winner selection is in the sole and absolute discretion of the B&H Social Team.
Any taxes are the sole responsibility of the winner. Winners will be notified and receive their prize at the email address associated with the account to which their Entry was posted or the email account provided with a mail-in entry. The odds of winning depend on the number of eligible entries received.
Identity of Winners/Eligible Participants. Winners will be identified by the email account associated with the Facebook or Twitter account from which their Entry was submitted or the email account provided with a mail-in entry. An email account holder shall mean the natural person assigned to such email account by the internet access or online service provider or other organization responsible for assigning email addresses for the domain associated with such email account. Any issues regarding the identity of a Winner shall be resolved by Sponsor in its sole discretion. The Sweepstakes is only open to residents of the United States that are at least eighteen (18) years of age on their entry date and is not open to employees of Sponsor, their immediate family, any person domiciled with such employees, or any affiliates or subsidiaries of Sponsor.
Entry Ownership/Entrant Agreements. Entrants retain full ownership and copyrights to their Submission. However, by entering the Sweepstakes entrants grant Sponsor permission to use their Entries for promotional purposes on their respective social media channels with proper credit. Entrants also agree: (a) to be bound by these Official B&H $500.00 Gift Card Dash Sweepstakes Rules; (b) that any claims related to this Sweepstakes shall be resolved individually without resort to any form of class action and that awards, shall be limited to actual out-of-pocket costs incurred in entering the Sweepstakes, and shall not include incidental or consequential damages or attorneys fees; and (c) that any actual or perceived ambiguities in these rules shall be interpreted by Sponsor in their sole discretion. Sponsor may modify or discontinue the Sweepstakes at any time and may disqualify from the Sweepstakes any person it determines, in its sole discretion, to have attempted to or actually tampered with or otherwise abused any aspect of the Sweepstakes. Entrants agree that in the unlikely event a dispute arises in connection with this Sweepstakes, it will be governed by the laws of the State of New York and heard exclusively in a court of applicable jurisdiction in the County and State of New York irrespective of any choice of law provisions to the contrary. Rated 5 out of 5 by SoCal Techie from Amazing. Where the transfer/backup speed with my 6TB WD My Book drives is about 65 mb, the 8TB drive transferred data at about 130 mb. Faster is always better, and when you can do the job in half the time, you have to be happy. I immediately ordered another five drives when the test unit performed so well. My ONLY unhappy point is that they reduced the internal drive identification/information area.
I use it to record the topics and dates of the backup data. It was about 20 characters on the 6TB My Book and 5TB Elements series, but now it's only about 10 characters on the 8TB. I have no idea why they would do that. I guess I'll have to use notes taped to the outside of the drives to keep track of information that was so easy to record and change before. But the faster transfer speed is worth the extra inconvenience.

I used the Apple Disc Utility to format the disk first, and it has worked perfectly. Because my MacBookPro is an older model and has USB2, FireWire and Thunderbolt ports, and this WD drive has USB 3, I had to buy a Thunderbolt to USB 3 adapter to get high speed data transfer to the drive. Unfortunately, these adapters are expensive.
I wish this drive had a light to show when the disc is active (the previous WD external drive I used had a light, I replaced it only because it was full and I want to keep old backups). Rated 5 out of 5 by FidoPibb from Works as expected I am using for 2nd copy of backup images and the drive is only online during data transfers. Arrives with drive formatted as exFAT. If using only with Windows, drive should be reformatted as NTFS to improve performance. I did this using Windows Disk Management (Computer/Manage/Disk Management) rather than bother with a WD utility.
Drive does make more noise than older smaller capacity WD My Books but not as much as my computer's fan. It does not have an activity light but that is not important with Windows providing data transfer information and taking care to eject the drive before removing power or USB connections.

12, 2017 I was considering trying another brand for my external hard drive for my Mac Book Pro Retina, Early 2013 because I already had two previous external hard drive WD My Book products. But when I saw WD 8tb My Book Desktop Usb 3.0 External Hard Drive up in B&H for sale, I could not resist trying it again.
And I have no regrets. When I installed, it was friendly and seamless as if it was native to my desktop! I will recommend this product to others looking for a heavier-duty external hard drive. Rated 4 out of 5 by Anonymous from A different experience To allow for expanded capacity the platters in these drives now float on helium and not air.
That means they make different noises on startup than you'll be accustomed to from air filled drives. They're also a bit noisier when idling and make a soft ticking noise. They run quiet while writing to disk and spin down when not in use.
The sounds they make do take some getting used to, but overall I've been very satisfied with the drives. They might not be the best choice for a very quiet environment. The aesthetic design of the case is outstanding. Rated 4 out of 5 by Pablo from Careful if you plan on Shucking the drive The hdd itself work really well, cant say much about the enclosure, as i have only use them inside my PC, to me they are relatively quiet (not as quiet as 3tb reds though), but some tend to vibrate some, not a bad drives, specially for the current pricing. Warning, these drives were really good offering for shucking them, take them off the enclosure and using them on inside your pc/server, but from August 28th 2017 (production date) and newer, the drives will not load on standard sata power, the reason is there is a reset on 3.3V, you can either cover with tape the 3.3 pin on the hdd or use a Molex from your PSU and use a Molex to Sata converter, this is only if you plan on using it on your PC/Server. It's a typical WD My Book, except in a cheap move they've eliminated the activity light. You don't know how handy that little light was until it's gone, you get no confirmation of the drive operating.
AND, they don't tell you before you buy it. WD has the worst web site on Earth, as far as disingenuous advertising. You simply cannot discern the differences in the products, which is often just the styling of the case. If you call you get absolutely clueless kids reading off of canned blurbs. A very annoying dense corporate layer of advertising fudge, it's too bad, the devices are fine. Rated 5 out of 5 by Anonymous from Performing great This is my first HD larger than 4TB, and all I can say after about two weeks of use is that this drive has not only met but also exceeded my high expectations. Transfering data from my dedicated drobo iTunes library took actually way less time than expected.
This 8TB drive is now serving as my main iTunes drive, hosting more than 6TB of data already. It actually goes to sleep a bit quicker than I'm used to from most other WD and HGST drives I own.
Wd Easystore How To Use
At least it feels that way. Recovering from sleep mode takes about ten seconds, that's not something bothering me for that purpose. This drive needs to be large and reliable first and foremost. Time will tell if it will hold up as well as the many other WD and HGST drives I do own or have owned. This single drive of course uses much less energy than having a 4-bay drobo running my iTunes library. The drobo is now the big backup container for several drives in my household.
